How does LASIK eye surgery work? LASIK is a computer aided procedure that involves ultraviolet rays to reshape the cornea and the procedure takes less than 30 minutes. The procedure essentially involves three steps.

  1. A suction ring placed in the eye lift to prevent the eye from moving .An automated instrument is used to create a thin corneal flap is lifted and folded back.
  2. The excimer laser (using ultraviolet rays) which has been pre-programmed with measurements specifically for the eyes, is than centered above the eye.
  3. The corneal flap is repositioned and the flap and interface are rinsed and surgeon waits for 2 to 3 minutes to ensure the corneal flap has reattached fully. Nature affixes the flap rather quickly into its former place and position means of osmotic pressure. Patient can blink normally and corneal flap remains in position.

What should i discuss with my doctor before undergoing LASIK? One should discuss with eye doctor if he/she is an ideal candidate to undergo LASIK. LASIK is not indicated in certain conditions and therefore, a thorough examination by a qualified ophthalmologist is required .Since LASIK is a surgical procedure the possible side effects and complications of LASIK should be understood before giving consent for surgery.

What are the requirements Before LASIK? There are certain specific does and don’ts before undergoing LASIK they include

  1. A complete eye examinations, wash eye thoroughly and frequently to avoid any chance of infection.
  2. Eat a light meal before the procedure.
  3. Take routine prescriptions medications except those instructed to be stopped before the procedure.
  4. Stop using creams, lotions, make up and perfumes a day before the procedure.
  5. Stop wearing contact lenses and switch to spectacles.

What to expect after LASIK? Like any surgical procedure, LASIK has certain common side effects and complications. Most of the common side effects are minor and disappear within 3 to 6 months. They include minimal discomfort tearing or watering of eyes, sensitivity to light hazy or blurring of vision. Most complications of LASIK can be treated and the incidence of serious complications is less than 1%.
